E-Bike Battery Care: Getting the Most Life From Your Pack
A little routine care can add years to a battery that costs hundreds of pounds to replace.
E-bike batteries use the same lithium-ion cells found in laptops and phones, and follow the same basic rules for a long life: avoid extremes, and don't leave them sitting at either end of the charge scale for too long.
Running a battery flat regularly puts more stress on the cells than keeping it topped up more often with shorter charges. Equally, leaving a battery sitting at 100% for weeks on end — say, over winter storage — accelerates degradation compared to storing it around 40-60% charge.
Temperature matters just as much as charge level. Charging a battery that's freezing cold, or storing one in a hot shed or car boot, both shorten its useful life. Bringing the battery indoors to charge, and storing it somewhere cool and dry, makes a real difference over a few years.
Finally, always use the charger that came with the bike, or one explicitly approved by the manufacturer. Cheap third-party chargers can deliver the wrong voltage or lack the safety cut-offs built into the original, which is a real fire risk as well as a battery health issue.
