What is a Smart Lock?
A lock you open with your phone instead of a key.
Simplified schematic — not to scale.
In plain English
A smart lock replaces a traditional key with Bluetooth or an app, sometimes adding alarm and tracking features on top of the usual physical security.
A simple analogy
“It's a normal bike lock that's learned to talk to your phone.”
How it works
The lock's internal electronics verify your phone is nearby (or that you've entered a code) before releasing the mechanism, while some models also log location and trigger alarms if moved.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Won't unlock even with the app connected
- ⚠Battery drains very quickly
- ⚠False alarm triggers from normal handling
Rough UK cost
£40 – £200
