Chain Suck

The chain sticks to the chainring instead of releasing cleanly.

What's happening

Instead of feeding cleanly off the bottom of the chainring, the chain gets dragged up and around with it — usually accompanied by a nasty grinding noise.

Likely causes

  • A dirty, dry or worn chain
  • Worn or bent chainring teeth
  • A stiff link snagging as it passes the chainring

What to do

Stop pedalling immediately if it happens — forcing it can bend the derailleur or jam the wheel. Clean and lubricate the chain before riding on.

Heads up: Bikeautonomy is for general guidance only. If your bike is behaving oddly, get it inspected by a qualified bike mechanic.
