A barrel adjuster is a small threaded dial, usually near the shifter or derailleur, that lets you fine-tune cable tension by hand to sharpen up sloppy shifting.

How it works
Turning the barrel outward effectively lengthens the housing, adding cable tension; turning it inward shortens it, releasing tension — shifting the derailleur's resting position slightly each way.
