What is a Gear Cables & Housing?
The cable and outer sleeve that carries your shift command to the derailleur.

A thin steel cable runs from the shifter to the derailleur inside a plastic-and-metal outer housing, carrying the pull that moves your gears.
A simple analogy
“It's like an old-fashioned bell-pull for the servants' quarters — pull one end, something moves at the other.”
How it works
Tension in the inner cable, set by the housing's fixed length, directly controls how far the derailleur moves for each click of the shifter.
Signs of trouble

- ⚠Fraying visible at the cable end
- ⚠Sluggish shifting that improves briefly after lubrication
