What is a Headset?
The bearings that let your fork, and the handlebars, turn smoothly.

In plain English
The headset is the set of bearings at the top and bottom of the frame's head tube, letting the fork (and everything attached to it) steer smoothly.
A simple analogy
“It's the hinge of the whole steering system — everywhere you point the bars, this is what lets the front end follow.”
How it works
Bearings sit in cups pressed into the frame, sandwiching the fork's steerer tube so it can rotate freely while staying held firmly in line.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Clunking sound through the front end under braking
- ⚠Notchy or 'indexed' feeling when turning the bars
- ⚠Play when you rock the bike with the front brake held
