What is a Stem?
The short tube connecting the handlebar to the fork's steerer.
Simplified schematic — not to scale.
In plain English
The stem clamps around the fork's steerer tube at one end and the handlebar at the other, setting your reach and handlebar height.
A simple analogy
“It's the short, stiff bridge between your steering wheel and the front wheel's pivot point.”
How it works
Bolts clamp the stem tightly to the steerer tube below, and to the handlebar above, so any bolt movement risks the bars twisting under load.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Handlebar twists or slips out of position
- ⚠Creaking under hard steering input
- ⚠Visible gap or looseness at either clamp
Rough UK cost
£15 – £80
