What are Mudguards?
The arched shields that stop wheel spray hitting you and your bike.
Simplified schematic — not to scale.
In plain English
Mudguards (or fenders) curve over the top of the wheel to block water and grit thrown up by the tyre, keeping your back and your drivetrain drier.
A simple analogy
“They're a small umbrella for your bike, positioned exactly where the spray would otherwise fly.”
How it works
A curved plastic or metal guard is fixed close to the tyre's arc via stays, physically blocking the spray thrown up as the wheel spins through wet ground.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Rattling noise over bumps
- ⚠Guard rubbing against the tyre
- ⚠Stay bracket cracked or missing
Rough UK cost
£10 – £50 a set
