Wheels & Tyres
What is a Wheel Rim?
The metal or carbon hoop the tyre sits on and the spokes pull against.
Simplified schematic — not to scale.
In plain English
The rim is the circular structure the tyre wraps around. Spokes pull inward from the hub to keep it perfectly round and true under load.
A simple analogy
“It's a drum skin held taut by dozens of tiny tuning pegs — the spokes.”
How it works
Each spoke's tension pulls the rim into shape from a different angle. Get all the tensions balanced and the wheel spins true; let one go slack and it starts to wobble.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Wobble or wave when spinning the wheel
- ⚠Visible dents or flat spots
- ⚠A worn braking track groove on rim-brake wheels
Rough UK cost
£30 – £200+ to rebuild or replace
