What are Gear Shifters?
The levers or buttons you press to change gear.

Shifters are the controls, usually built into or near the brake levers, that you press to move the chain up or down the cassette or chainrings.
A simple analogy
“They're the remote control for your gears — press a button here, something moves down by the back wheel.”
How it works
Mechanical shifters pull or release cable with each click; electronic shifters send a signal to a small motor in the derailleur that does the moving instead.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Shifts feel vague, delayed or require extra clicks
- ⚠Lever doesn't return to its resting position
- ⚠No response at all from an electronic shifter
