What is a Pannier Rack?

The frame over the wheel that carries bags, without them touching the tyre.

Simplified schematic — not to scale.

In plain English

A pannier rack bolts to the frame near the rear (or front) wheel, giving you a sturdy platform to strap bags to for commuting or touring.

A simple analogy

It's the roof rack of the bike world — extra carrying capacity that doesn't get in the way of the ride.

How it works

Bolts at the frame's dropouts and seat stays hold the rack rigid over the wheel, with side rails keeping panniers clear of the spinning spokes.

Signs of trouble

  • Rattling or flexing under load
  • Cracked welds where struts meet the frame
  • Bags swinging into the wheel
Rough UK cost

£15 – £80
