Gear Indexing Check
Making sure each shift lands cleanly on the intended sprocket.
Why bother
Indexing is the fine adjustment that makes each click of the shifter move the chain exactly one sprocket, no more, no less.
How to check
- 1Shift through every gear, front and back, listening for noise
- 2Note any gear that hesitates or needs an extra click
- 3Adjust the barrel adjuster in small increments to correct drift
- 4If adjustment doesn't help, check cable condition and hanger alignment
How often
Every couple of months, or whenever shifting feels off
