Chain Skipping Under Load
The chain jumps or slips when you pedal hard.
What's happening
You stand up on the pedals or push hard uphill, and the chain suddenly skips forward, as if it's lost its grip on the sprocket for a moment.
Likely causes
- •A worn, 'stretched' chain riding up on worn cassette teeth
- •A stiff link that won't sit properly on the sprocket
- •A worn rear derailleur unable to keep tension
What to do
Ride gently and avoid standing pedalling until checked. A chain-and-cassette combo that's badly worn usually needs both replaced together.
