What it is
Mechanical shifting uses a physical cable pulled by the shift lever, needs occasional adjustment as cables stretch, but is simple to fix roadside. Electronic shifting uses a button press and a small motor for consistently precise shifts that rarely need adjusting, at a higher price and with a battery to keep charged.
Why it matters
Electronic systems shine for riders who want shifting to just work without fiddling, while mechanical remains cheaper, easier to repair away from a workshop, and immune to running flat.
